In the northern outskirts of Innsbruck, across the River Inn, is located the Alpenzoo. The distance from the old town is only 1.5 km, so it can be reached in a short and very pleasant walk up the hill using the northern end of Rennweg as a starting point. If you dont want to walk you can take the Hungerburgbahn which is free if you buy a zoo ticket before using it. This is the highest zoo in Europe, located at 727 meters above the sea level on the sunny southern slopes of the mountains north from the Tyrolean capital city and overlooking its rooftops. The alleys are mainly paved and, as the terrain is very steep, there are many steps. It takes approximately from 1 to 2 hours to tour the entire zoo. The Alpenzoo features a wide collection of almost all Alpine animals more than two thousand animals of various species. The most interesting among them are the amorous bear and the combative ibexes. Near the zoo, on the opposite southern bank of the River Inn, is situated the Rundgemlde. This is a circular building where visitors can see an enormous (1000 square meters) painting representing the heroic battle at Bergisel Hill. The structure also presents a very evocative exhibition of the details about the world trips of Max Reisch, a famous Austrian travel writer, who made his trips in the time when the long-distance travel was not as easy as today.
