Saalbach-Hinterglemm is a prime ski resort with a picturesque location at the foot of the breathtaking Kitzb�hel Alps, in the Pinzgau region of Austria, 20 km from the worth-seeing lakeside town of Zell am See and 64 km from the marvelous historic city of Salzburg. The municipality of this premier alpine resort consists of two neighboring towns: Saalbach and Hinterglemm, connected by a panoramic road, which can be taken in a 7-8 minute drive. The average elevation of the resort is 1000 m or almost 3300 ft. The two twin towns are also connected by regular ski bus lines sand have a common ski lift system.
The base station of the main ski lift of the area is located right in the town centre of Saalbach. This is the Schattberg cable car, which highest station is at about 2000 m above sea level and has a charming panoramic restaurant, open in both winter and summer and having a nice sunny terrace with spectacular views over the valley and the surrounding Kitzb�hel Alps. The local lift system includes another 55 modern chairlifts and ski tows, which will get you to the top of more than 200 km of excellent downhill skiing and snowboarding slopes for all skill levels. Summer visitors can discover more than 250 km of picturesque hiking treks and exciting mountain biking routes. Other possible outdoor activities in the area include horse riding, mountain climbing, tennis, mini golf, swimming and sunbathing on the marvelous beaches of the nearby Lake Zeller (20 km).
The earliest settlement on the area of the present-day resort dates back to the 13th century. The village was first mentioned as �Salpach� in a historic document from the middle of the 14th century. In 1489 the settlement was given the rights of a market town by the Archbishop of Vienna. There is evidence that a medieval church existed in the centre of the town until 1410. The area developed as an attractive ski destination after the World War II. The two neighboring towns were united in the municipality of Saalbach-Hinterglemm in 1987.
